Decluttering Before Christmas: Make Room for a Calmer Festive Season
A little clearing out in the weeks before December can make your home feel calmer, roomier and ready for guests and gifts.

Christmas has a way of filling a home. There are decorations to unpack, presents to hide, food to store and, often, guests to squeeze in. If your cupboards are already bursting in October, December can quickly feel chaotic. A gentle declutter in the weeks before the festive season is one of the kindest things you can do for your future self, freeing up space, time and a surprising amount of headspace.
Start Small and Start Early
The biggest mistake is trying to clear the entire house in one weekend. You will run out of energy halfway through the spare room and end up with piles everywhere. Instead, choose one small area at a time: a single kitchen drawer, the shoe rack, the bathroom cabinet. Short, focused sessions feel manageable, and the sense of progress keeps you going.
Starting in autumn gives you several weeks to work through the house steadily, rather than a frantic scramble a few days before relatives arrive.
Focus on the Festive Hotspots
Some areas of the home take the strain at Christmas more than others, so they are worth tackling first:
- The kitchen, especially the fridge, freezer and food cupboards. Use up or clear out old jars and forgotten packets so there is room for festive food.
- The hallway, where coats, bags and shoes pile up. Guests will need somewhere to put their things.
- The spare room or sofa bed area, if you are having people to stay.
- The living room, where the tree and decorations will go.
- Children’s toys and games, ahead of new gifts arriving.
Sort Into Clear Piles
As you go through each area, sort things into four simple groups: keep, donate, recycle and bin. Having bags or boxes ready for each makes decisions faster. Be realistic about what you use. If something has not been touched in a year and holds no real meaning, it is probably time for it to go.
Every item you let go of is one less thing to tidy, clean and find a home for over the holidays.
Check Your Decorations
Before the festive boxes come down from the loft, give them a quick sort. Test the fairy lights, throw out broken baubles and pass on decorations you no longer love. You may find you have more than enough and do not need to buy anything new this year. If any lights look damaged or the wiring is worn, it is safest to replace them.
Give Things a Good Second Home
The weeks before Christmas are a great time to donate. Charity shops often welcome good-quality clothes, books, toys and homeware, though it is worth checking what your local shop accepts. Some items, such as unopened toiletries or warm coats, may be gratefully received by local community groups or shelters.
Selling unwanted items online can also bring in a little extra money for festive spending, though it takes time to photograph, list and post things. Be honest with yourself about whether you will actually get round to it, or whether donating is the easier option.
Keep It Up Through December
Once you have cleared space, try a simple one-in, one-out approach as gifts arrive. When a child receives a new toy, an old one could be passed on. When a new jumper comes into the wardrobe, an old one goes out.
A few minutes of tidying each evening keeps the clutter from creeping back. Then, when the big day arrives, you can sit back with a mince pie in a home that feels calm, comfortable and ready to enjoy.
