Autumn Fashion Trends 2026: Why Texture Is the Look to Wear

Among this season’s autumn fashion trends, it is not just colour doing the talking. Look around the AW26 collections and one idea keeps coming up: texture. Suede, borg, corduroy and chunky knits are all back, and together they make even a simple outfit look considered.

The nice thing about this trend is how easy it is to wear. You do not need a new wardrobe, just one or two tactile pieces mixed in with what you already own.

Suede: the richest texture of the season

Suede has appeared across the AW26 runways, particularly in warm browns and tans. It has a soft, matte finish that looks expensive without trying too hard.

A jacket or a handbag is the easiest way in. A tan suede-effect jacket looks just as good over jeans and a white tee as it does over a midi dress, and if real suede is out of your budget, the faux versions have come a long way.

Borg: instant cosiness

Borg brings comfort and character in one go. A borg-lined aviator jacket in chocolate brown, or a teddy-style gilet, adds texture without needing much styling.

The trick is to keep everything else simple. Let the borg layer be the statement, and keep the base to plain knitwear, dark denim or a slip skirt.

Corduroy: the comeback that makes sense

Corduroy suits everyday dressing. It has enough texture to look interesting, but it does not shout. A navy cord shirt dress with ankle boots is an almost effortless autumn outfit, and cord trousers or a cord jacket work in the same way.

It is also hard-wearing, which is a bonus if you want pieces that last beyond one season.

Knitwear with depth

If you would rather keep things classic, look at knits with detail. Cable stitches, pointelle patterns and ribbed trims all add depth to a jumper, so jeans and a knit can look more thought through than the sum of the parts.

Grey marl, cream and oatmeal are easy to pair with the richer suede and cord shades above.

How to wear the autumn fashion trends

The easiest rule is to mix textures rather than add more colour or print. Suede with denim, cord with a chunky knit, or borg over a simple base all work. Stick to a calm palette of browns, creams, navy and grey, then let the fabrics add the interest.

Try one textured piece at a time at first. Once you are comfortable, layer two, such as a cord skirt with a cable-knit jumper. Familiar autumn staples start to feel new again, and you did not have to start from scratch.
