Soft Glam Make-Up: The Everyday Look That Works for Almost Anything

Some make-up looks belong to one occasion only: the dramatic smoky eye for a party, the bare skin of a lazy Sunday. Soft glam sits happily in between. It is polished enough for a wedding or a big meeting, relaxed enough for brunch, and forgiving enough that you do not need the steady hands of a professional to pull it off. The idea is simple: everything looks a little enhanced, nothing looks heavy.

Start With Skin That Looks Like Skin

The base is where soft glam either works or falls apart. Begin with moisturised skin and a primer if you like one, then use a light-to-medium coverage foundation or skin tint. Apply it where you need it most, usually the centre of the face, and blend outwards so the edges fade away. Concealer can then go only on the spots or shadows you want to soften, rather than in a thick triangle under the eyes.

A cream blush, dabbed onto the apples of the cheeks and blended up towards the temples, gives a natural flush. Finish with a little powder on the areas that tend to shine, such as the forehead and around the nose, and leave the rest of the face with some glow.

Eyes: Blended, Warm and Easy

Soft glam eyes are all about diffused colour. Choose two or three neutral shades in matte or satin finishes: a light shade for the lid, a mid-tone brown, taupe or rose for the crease, and a deeper shade to define the outer corner. Blend in small circles with a fluffy brush until there are no harsh lines.

  • Tap a shimmer shade onto the centre of the lid with a fingertip for a bit of light.
  • Use a brown pencil instead of black liquid liner, smudging it along the lash line.
  • Curl your lashes before mascara to open the eyes up.
  • Groom brows with a clear or tinted gel rather than drawing them in heavily.

The secret to soft glam is restraint: if in doubt, blend a little more and add a little less.

Lips and Finishing Touches

A lip shade close to your natural colour, or a touch deeper, keeps the look balanced. Line the lips with a matching pencil, fill them in lightly, then add a satin lipstick or a tinted balm on top. Glossy, sheer finishes look fresh in the daytime, while a velvety finish feels a little more grown-up for evenings.

To turn soft glam up for a night out, deepen the outer corner of the eye, add a few individual lashes and switch to a richer lip. To dial it down for the office, skip the shimmer and the liner. Once you have the basic routine sorted, it becomes the reliable look you can do in fifteen minutes and adapt for almost any plan in your diary.
