Long-Distance Love: Small Habits That Make the Miles Feel Shorter

Whether it is a job in another city, a stint of study abroad or simply meeting someone wonderful who happens to live at the other end of the country, long-distance relationships are more common than ever. They come with obvious challenges – missed moments, expensive train tickets, goodbyes at the station – but with a bit of care they can be close, happy and full of things to look forward to.

Keep in touch, but keep it natural

Regular contact matters, though more is not always better. Rather than feeling obliged to message all day, agree on a rhythm that suits you both, such as a proper video call a few evenings a week with lighter messages in between. Quality counts: a relaxed chat where you are both properly present beats an hour of distracted scrolling.

Try to share the ordinary as well as the big news. A photo of your lunch, a voice note about a funny moment on the bus or a description of what you can see from the window helps your partner feel part of your everyday life.

Do things together, apart

  • Watch the same film at the same time while on a call.
  • Cook the same recipe and eat together over video.
  • Start a two-person book club and swap thoughts chapter by chapter.
  • Post each other a letter or a small parcel – a handwritten note still feels special.

Always have a next date

Knowing when you will next see each other makes a huge difference. Book visits ahead where you can, take turns travelling so the cost and effort are shared, and talk openly about your longer-term plans, including when and how you might eventually live in the same place.

Distance tests a relationship, but it can also build a strong habit of talking honestly. Keep the conversation going and keep a date in the diary.
