Confidence at Work: Small Daily Habits That Help You Speak Up

Have you ever sat in a meeting with a good idea, waited for the right moment and then heard someone else say almost exactly the same thing? Plenty of capable people hold back at work, worried about sounding silly, being wrong or taking up too much space. Confidence can seem like something other people were simply born with, but in reality it is more like a muscle. It strengthens with practice, and the exercises can be surprisingly small.

Prepare a Little More

Much of what looks like natural confidence is actually preparation. Before a meeting, glance at the agenda and jot down one point or question you would like to raise. Having it written in front of you makes it far easier to speak, and once you have contributed early, the rest of the meeting usually feels less daunting.

Change the Way You Talk About Yourself

Pay attention to the words you use. Phrases such as “this is probably a stupid question” or “I’m not an expert, but” can undermine your point before you have even made it. Try simply asking the question or stating your view. Similarly, when someone praises your work, resist the urge to brush it off. A warm “thank you, I really enjoyed working on that” is enough.

It can also help to keep a private record of your wins. Note down positive feedback, problems you solved and things you learned. On days when self-doubt creeps in, reading back through it is a useful reminder of what you have achieved.

Take Small, Regular Risks

Confidence grows when you do slightly uncomfortable things and discover that you survive them. You might:

  • Volunteer to give a short update at a team meeting
  • Ask a question in a training session
  • Share a draft with a colleague and invite their feedback
  • Offer to help on a project outside your usual role

Each small step makes the next one feel a little more ordinary.

Be kind to yourself when things do not go perfectly. Everyone stumbles over words or gets something wrong now and then, and most people forget it far faster than you do. Pick one habit from this list, practise it for a fortnight and notice how it changes the way you feel at work.
