We spend weeks planning what to wear on holiday: crisp linen for Italy, bright swimwear for Ibiza, elegant dresses for evenings on the Riviera. But have you thought about what you will smell like?
A fragrance expert, Jonny Webber, believes a destination fragrance can make a trip feel richer. His idea is to choose a scent that fits the climate, mood and natural aromas of the place you are visiting, so everything feels more immersive.
Why destination fragrance works
Webber’s advice is that different places suit different scent families. Whether you are bound for lemon groves or spice souks, a fragrance that echoes the setting should feel like part of the scenery.
Our sense of smell is closely tied to memory. Wear the same perfume for a whole holiday and you may find that one whiff, months later, takes you straight back to the beach or the old town. It is a clever, simple souvenir.
Amalfi Coast and the Italian lakes
Think huge lemons, citrus groves, cypress-lined villas, jasmine and wisteria. The look here is bright, sparkling and quietly luxurious.
Notes to look for include Sicilian lemon, bergamot, cypress, olive wood, neroli, jasmine, fig leaf, fresh linen and white musk. Clean, uplifting scents feel right in the heat and blend with the surroundings rather than competing with them.
Ibiza, the Balearics and the Greek Islands
Beyond the beach clubs and sunsets, much of Ibiza is covered in pine woodland. Rosemary and thyme bake in the sun, and the beaches smell of sea air and coconut sunscreen.
In Ibiza, look for creamy coconut, sunny florals and warm amber, balanced by pistachio, herbs or soft woods. You want that just-back-from-the-beach feeling of warm skin.
Greek island holidays smell different again. Whitewashed villages, dry heat and the salty Aegean breeze set the scene. Stroll the winding streets and you will catch citrus trees, wild oregano, sage and basil.
Marine scents work beautifully here. Try sea salt, green fig leaf and aromatic herbs blended with jasmine or orange blossom for a relaxed, sun-drenched mood.
The French Riviera
This is quiet luxury, from smart hotels in Cannes to hidden coves near Saint-Tropez. Grasse, the world’s perfume capital, lies in the hills just north of Cannes, surrounded by fields of jasmine, rose and lavender.
On the Riviera, choose elegant floral bases lifted with citrus and softened by musk or delicate woods. The scent should be balanced and polished, never loud. Typical notes include:
- Mimosa
- Lavender
- Iris
- Cedarwood
Marrakech
If any destination rewards a bolder perfume, it is this one.
The medina is a feast for the nose: spice stalls, fresh mint tea, orange trees in courtyards and the rich smell of leather from artisan workshops.
Warmer, deeper scents suit it best. Pair heady florals such as jasmine with spice and smoky touches. Look for orange blossom, Moroccan rose, cinnamon, saffron, patchouli, incense and sandalwood.
It is a small touch, but it costs little to try and could turn an ordinary packing list into something more memorable. Just remember that lighter scents tend to feel nicer in hot weather.
Perfume, like a good holiday outfit, is about mood. You do not need a different bottle for every stop. Pick one that suits where you are heading, and let it become part of the story of the trip.
