Winter Sun Ideas: Warm Escapes to Brighten the Darkest Months

By the time the clocks go back and the afternoons start to fade before you’ve even finished work, the idea of feeling sunshine on your face can seem almost impossible. Yet winter sun is often closer than you think. A short flight can swap drizzle for blue skies, and even a long weekend somewhere bright can lift your mood for weeks afterwards.

Close to Home: Southern Europe

The Canary Islands are the classic choice for winter warmth within reach of the UK. Sitting off the coast of north-west Africa, they enjoy a mild climate all year round, and each island has its own personality. Some are known for lively resorts, others for volcanic landscapes, black sand beaches and quiet hiking trails.

Madeira is another favourite, with its dramatic cliffs, flower-filled gardens and gentle temperatures. Further north, southern Spain, the Algarve, Malta and Cyprus won’t always be beach-hot in midwinter, but they often offer crisp, sunny days that are perfect for exploring towns, walking coastal paths and eating outdoors.

Further Afield

If you have more time, longer-haul destinations open up genuine tropical heat. The Caribbean, parts of South-East Asia, the Middle East and southern Africa all have their peak seasons during our winter. These trips need more planning and a bigger budget, but they can be a memorable way to break up the colder months.

Things to Check Before You Book

  • Weather patterns: some places have rainy seasons in winter, so read up on typical conditions for your travel dates.
  • Daylight hours: a destination nearer the equator will give you noticeably longer, brighter days.
  • Health advice: for long-haul trips, check official travel health guidance and speak to your GP or a travel clinic well ahead of time.
  • Entry requirements: look up passport validity and any visa rules on official government advice pages.

Make the Most of the Light

Winter sun breaks are about soaking up daylight, so plan your days around it. Get out early, enjoy a long lunch outdoors and save museums or spa time for the evenings. Don’t forget sunscreen, too, because winter sun can still be strong. Pack a light jumper for cooler evenings, as even warm destinations can feel chilly once the sun goes down.

Whether you go for four days in the Canaries or a fortnight somewhere tropical, a bright escape in the darkest part of the year is a gift to yourself. Start looking now, and you’ll have something warm to look forward to.
