Halloween and Bonfire Night at Home: Cosy Ideas for All the Family

Late October and early November bring two of the most atmospheric nights of the British year. Halloween and Bonfire Night are wonderful excuses to gather people together, but you do not need crowded displays or expensive outings to enjoy them. With a bit of imagination, your own home and garden can become the cosiest place to celebrate.

A Spooky Night In for Halloween

Start with the atmosphere. Swap bright overhead lights for lamps, fairy lights and battery-powered candles, which are much safer than real flames around costumes and small children. Carve or decorate pumpkins together – younger children can use paint, stickers or felt-tip pens instead of knives – and line them up by the front door or on a windowsill.

Plan a few simple activities to keep everyone entertained:

  • A home trick-or-treat trail: hide sweets or small treats around the house with spooky clues.
  • Apple bobbing: a classic for a reason, best done in the kitchen with plenty of towels.
  • Costume parade: make outfits from what you already have, then vote for the best one.
  • Film night: choose something to suit the age of your audience, from gentle animated favourites to classic chillers for older family members.

For food, think fun rather than fancy. Pizza faces, sausage “mummies” wrapped in pastry, toffee apples and a big pan of warming soup all go down well.

Bonfire Night in the Back Garden

If you would rather skip the busy organised displays, you can still capture the feel of 5 November at home. Wrap up warmly, put out blankets and gather around a fire pit or chiminea if you have one, making sure it is well away from fences, sheds and overhanging trees. Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby and never leave a fire unattended.

The magic of Bonfire Night is not really the bangs – it is the cold air, warm hands and everyone gathered together outside.

If you are using fireworks or sparklers, only buy them from licensed retailers, follow the instructions on the packaging and keep children supervised at all times. Sparklers should be handed out with gloves and dropped into a bucket of water once they have burned out. Many families now prefer quieter options, such as glow sticks, lanterns and outdoor fairy lights, which are kinder to pets, wildlife and neighbours.

Warming Treats to Share

No Bonfire Night is complete without something hot to hold. Try mugs of hot chocolate with marshmallows, mulled apple juice or spiced cider for the grown-ups, jacket potatoes wrapped in foil and baked in the oven, and a tray of sticky parkin or treacle toffee. Toasting marshmallows over the embers of a fire pit is a simple pleasure that children never tire of.

Whichever night you celebrate, keep it relaxed. A few lights, a warm drink and good company are all you really need to make late autumn feel special.
